Sea Lamprey Collection

The Sea Lamprey (Petromyzon marinus) is a species of eel-like fish native to the Northern Hemisphere, and is an invasive species in the Great Lakes region of North America, where it has caused significant damage to native fish populations, long, slender body with a large mouth filled with sharp teeth. Its color ranges from yellowish-brown to black and its length can reach up to 1 meter. It feeds on other fishes by attaching itself to them and sucking their blood or body fluids. The Sea Lamprey reproduces by spawning in freshwater streams and rivers, laying eggs that hatch into larvae which later migrate back out into the ocean as adults. Control measures such as trapping, chemical treatments, and physical barriers have been used in attempts to reduce their population numbers but have had limited success due to their high reproductive rate and wide range of habitats they inhabit.
