Roach is a freshwater fish that belongs to the Cyprinidae family, and is native to Europe, Asia and North Africa, but can now be found in many parts of the world. Roaches are omnivorous, eating both plant and animal matter. They have a long body with an olive-brown back and silvery sides. The fins are reddish-orange in color and they have two barbels on their upper jaw which help them find food in murky waters, and are reach up to 25 cm (10 inches) in length and live for up to 8 years. They prefer slow moving rivers or lakes with plenty of vegetation where they can hide from predators such as pike or perch. Roaches are an important food source for many species of birds, mammals, amphibians and reptiles making them an important part of aquatic ecosystems around the world.
