Rainbow Trout Collection

Rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) is a species of salmonid fish native to cold-water tributaries of the Pacific Ocean in Asia and North America, and are an important game fish sought by anglers and have been introduced for food or sport to many lakes and rivers worldwide. They have silver sides with black spots, pinkish-red stripes along their back, and a white belly and can grow up to 30 inches long and weigh up to 20 pounds. Rainbow trout feed on aquatic insects, crustaceans, small fish, plankton, worms, mollusks, algae, and plant material. Spawning takes place in spring or early summer when water temperatures reach 55°F (13°C). The female lays her eggs in a nest she has dug out in gravel at the bottom of streams or rivers. After hatching the fry will remain in the nest for several days before heading downstream into deeper waters where they feed on small organisms until they reach maturity at two years old.
