Pacific Herring Collection

Pacific herring (Clupea pallasii) is a species of fish in the Clupeidae family, found in the North Pacific Ocean, and are an important part of the marine food web, as they are preyed upon by larger fish, seabirds and marine mammals. Herring can grow up to 30 cm long and weigh up to 300 g. They have a silvery-blue body with a black spot near their tail fin. Herring spawn from late winter to early spring in large aggregations near shorelines, often forming dense schools that can be seen from the surface. Pacific herring feed on planktonic organisms such as copepods and euphausiids which they filter out of the water using their gill rakers. The eggs laid by female herring are an important food source for many species including salmon and sea birds like murres and cormorants. Pacific herring populations have been declining due to overfishing, pollution, habitat destruction and climate change making them vulnerable to extinction if not managed properly.
