Icefish Collection

Icefish, also known as whitebait or frostfish, are a family of fish found in the Southern Ocean around Antarctica, and are unique among fishes in that they lack both scales and hemoglobin, giving them their distinctive white coloration. They have adapted to their extreme environment by having an antifreeze protein in their blood which prevents it from freezing. They feed on krill and other small crustaceans, and reproduce by laying eggs on the seafloor and can an important part of the Antarctic food web and play a vital role in maintaining its fragile ecosystem. As global warming continues to affect the region, icefish populations may be at risk due to changes in ocean temperatures and acidification levels. Conservation efforts must be taken now to ensure these species can continue to thrive for generations to come.
