Common Carp Collection

Common Carp (Cyprinus carpio) is a species of freshwater fish native to Europe and Asia, and is an important food fish and has been introduced to many other parts of the world and can large, heavy bodied fish with a long dorsal fin and a wide, forked tail. They have a golden-brown coloration with dark spots on their sides and back, and are reach lengths up to 3 feet (90 cm) and weigh up to 44 pounds (20 kg). They feed on aquatic plants, insects, crustaceans, mollusks, worms, small fish, detritus, algae and other organic matter and can tolerant of poor water quality conditions but prefer clear water with plenty of vegetation for cover. They reproduce by spawning in shallow waters during the spring months when temperatures reach 68-77°F (20-25°C). The eggs hatch within two days after fertilization which occurs externally in open waters or near vegetation beds.
