American Lobster Collection

The American lobster (Homarus americanus) is a species of crustacean found in the Atlantic Ocean, from Newfoundland to North Carolina, and is one of the most economically important crustaceans in North America and is highly sought after for its sweet, succulent meat, hard, spiny shell that can range in color from light green to dark blue-green and red. Its body can reach up to three feet long and weigh up to 40 pounds. Its diet consists mainly of clams, mussels, crabs, sea urchins, worms and other small fish. The American lobster is an omnivore that lives in rocky areas along the ocean floor where it builds burrows for protection from predators such as codfish or large sharks. It reproduces by releasing eggs into the water which hatch into larvae that drift with ocean currents until they settle onto the seafloor as adults.
