Smew Collection

Smew (Mergellus albellus) is a small duck-like bird belonging to the ducks, geese and swans family, and is found in Europe, Asia and North America. Smews have a distinctive black-and-white plumage with a white head, chestnut neck and back, grey wings and tail feathers, and are usually seen in pairs or small flocks near water bodies such as lakes, rivers and marshes. The diet of smews consists mainly of fish but they also eat insects, crustaceans and mollusks, and are migratory birds that breed in northern Europe during the summer months before migrating south for the winter season, and are listed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List due to their large population size across their range but their numbers have been declining due to habitat loss caused by human activities such as drainage of wetlands for agriculture or urban development.
