Common Pochard Collection

The Common Pochard is a species of duck found in Eurasia, Africa, and parts of the Middle East, and is a medium-sized diving duck with a long neck and broad bill. The male has an iridescent dark green head, white breast, and grayish-brown body. The female is brown with a lighter face and neck. Both sexes have red eyes and orange legs and feet. They feed on aquatic plants, insects, mollusks, crustaceans, fish eggs, small fish, frogs and other aquatic animals. In winter they form large flocks that migrate to warmer climates in search of food sources. They breed during springtime in shallow wetlands with dense vegetation such as marshes or swamps where they build their nests out of grasses or reeds lined with down feathers from the female's breast plumage, and are considered to be an important indicator species for wetland health due to their sensitivity to environmental changes such as pollution or habitat destruction caused by human activities like agriculture or urbanization.
