Australian Shelduck Collection

The Australian Shelduck is a large waterfowl native to Australia and has a distinctive black and white plumage, with chestnut patches on the head and neck. The bill is black, the legs are orange-red, and the eyes are yellow. It typically inhabits wetlands, lakes, rivers and estuaries in search of food such as molluscs, crustaceans and aquatic plants and can also feed on land by grazing on grasses or grains. The Australian Shelduck is known for its loud honking call which can be heard from some distance away. They form strong pair bonds that last for life and will often stay together even when not breeding season. They nest in hollows in trees or banks near water bodies where they lay between 8-12 eggs at a time which hatch after about 28 days of incubation by both parents.
