Cape Petrel Collection

Cape Petrels, also known as Pintado Petrels, are seabirds found in the Southern Ocean and Antarctic regions. They have a distinctive black and white plumage with a white head and dark grey back. These birds can reach up to 40 cm in length with a wingspan of up to 90 cm. They feed on krill, squid, fish and other small marine creatures which they catch while flying or swimming near the surface of the ocean. Cape Petrels breed on rocky islands off the coast of Antarctica where they nest in burrows or crevices among rocks. During breeding season they form large colonies for protection from predators such as skuas and giant petrels, and are an important part of the Antarctic ecosystem as their droppings provide essential nutrients for other species such as penguins and seals that live there.
