Blue Petrel Collection

Blue Petrels are a species of seabird found in the Southern Hemisphere, and are medium-sized birds, with a wingspan of up to 50 cm and a length of around 30 cm. They have dark grey upperparts and white underparts, with blackish flight feathers on their wings. Blue Petrels feed mainly on small fish, squid and crustaceans which they catch by plunge-diving into the sea from heights of up to 10 meters. Breeding occurs during the summer months when they form large colonies on islands off the coast of New Zealand, Australia, South Africa and Chile. The chicks hatch after an incubation period of around 45 days and fledge after another 45 days or so, and are listed as Least Concern by the IUCN due to their wide distribution range and large population size; however they are threatened by human activities such as fishing nets, oil spills and introduced predators like cats or rats which can decimate breeding colonies in no time at all.
