Rheidae Collection

Rheidae, commonly known as Rheas birds, are a family of large flightless birds native to South America, and are the largest living bird species on the continent and can reach up to 2 meters in height and weigh up to 40 kilograms. Rheas have long legs and necks, with grey-brown feathers covering their bodies. They feed mainly on grasses, seeds, fruits, insects and small vertebrates. Their strong legs allow them to run quickly in order to escape predators or catch prey. The female lays two or three eggs which she incubates for around four weeks before hatching them out into chicks that are able to fly within a few weeks of hatching. Rheidae inhabit open grasslands and savannas where they form small flocks of up to 10 individuals that move around together looking for food sources or mates during the breeding season.
