Yellow Bellied Sapsucker Collection

The Yellow-bellied Sapsucker (Sphyrapicus varius) is a medium-sized woodpecker belonging to the Piciformes family of birds, and is native to North America and can be found in deciduous and coniferous forests, as well as urban areas and has a black head with white stripes on its cheeks, a red throat patch, and yellowish underparts. Its wings are barred with black and white stripes, while its tail feathers are barred with black and white chevrons. The Yellow-bellied Sapsucker feeds mainly on sap from trees by drilling holes in them, but it also eats insects, berries, fruits, nuts and seeds. Its call is a loud “churr” or “churrr” sound that can be heard during the breeding season when they are defending their territories. They nest in cavities excavated in dead trees or stumps by both sexes of the pair. The Yellow-bellied Sapsucker is an important species for maintaining healthy forest ecosystems because it helps disperse seeds from the fruit it eats throughout its range.
