Northern Flicker Collection

The Northern Flicker (Colaptes auratus) is a species of woodpecker belonging to the Piciformes family, and is native to North America, ranging from southern Canada to northern Mexico, large body size and distinctive red-shafted wings and tail feathers. Its back is brown with black barring, while its underside is white with black spots and has a yellow face and throat, as well as a red patch on the back of its head. The Northern Flicker feeds mainly on ants, but also eats fruits, nuts, seeds and other insects. It nests in cavities in trees or buildings and lays 4-7 eggs per clutch which are incubated by both parents for 12-14 days before hatching. This species can be found in open woodlands or urban areas where there are plenty of trees for nesting sites and food sources such as ant colonies.
