The head and back are black with white stripes down the sides, while the underparts are white. The wings have white spots on them and there is a red patch at the back of the head. This bird feeds mainly on insects, but will also eat fruits, nuts, and sap from trees. They nest in cavities that they excavate themselves in dead or dying trees or stumps and can be seen year-round throughout their range but may migrate south during winter months depending on food availability.
