Gila Woodpecker Collection

The Gila Woodpecker (Melanerpes uropygialis) is a species of woodpecker found in the southwestern United States and Mexico, and is a medium-sized bird with an overall length of 7-9 inches and a wingspan of 13-15 inches. Its plumage is mainly black, white, and gray, with red on its nape, crown, and throat. Its bill is long and straight for drilling into wood to find food such as insects or larvae. It also eats fruit, nuts, seeds, cactus fruits, and sap from saguaro cacti. The Gila Woodpecker nests in cavities excavated in dead trees or cacti by both sexes; it may also use artificial nest boxes provided by humans and can be seen alone or in pairs throughout its range year round but tends to be more common during the breeding season from March through June when it becomes quite vocal with its loud “churr” call that can be heard up to half a mile away.
