Willow Ptarmigan Collection

Willow Ptarmigan (Lagopus lagopus) are a species of bird in the Phasianidae family, and are native to North America, Europe, and Asia. They inhabit boreal forests and tundra habitats. Willow Ptarmigans have a mottled brown plumage with white feathers on their wings and tail during the summer months. In winter, they turn completely white except for their black tail feathers. Willow Ptarmigans feed mainly on buds, leaves, seeds, berries, insects and other invertebrates found in their habitat. During the breeding season they form monogamous pairs that build nests on the ground lined with grasses and feathers for protection from predators. The female will lay four to eight eggs which she will incubate for about three weeks until hatching occurs. These birds are well adapted to cold climates due to their thick plumage which helps them stay warm in frigid temperatures, and are an important food source for many predators such as foxes and owls so it is important that we protect these birds from overhunting or habitat destruction so they can continue to thrive in our environment.
