Western Capercaillie Collection

The Western Capercaillie (Tetrao urogallus) is a large, ground-dwelling bird in the grouse family Phasianidae, and is native to the temperate and boreal forests of Europe, from Scandinavia to the Pyrenees. The male has a blackish-brown body with white spots on its wings and tail feathers, while the female is more mottled brown. Both sexes have a distinctive red wattle over their eyes. They feed mainly on buds, shoots, berries and other vegetation found in their habitat. During mating season males will display an impressive courtship ritual involving loud calls and extravagant posturing to attract females. The Western Capercaillie is listed as vulnerable due to loss of habitat caused by human activities such as logging and land conversion for agriculture or urban development. Conservation efforts are underway to protect this species from further decline.
