Cliff Swallow Collection

The Cliff Swallow (Petrochelidon pyrrhonota) is a species of passerine bird in the Hirundinidae family, and is native to North and South America, where it breeds in colonies near water or on cliffs, brownish-red forehead and crown, pale gray cheeks and throat, white underparts, and a forked tail with dark brown feathers. Its wings are dark brown with white patches near the tips. It feeds mainly on flying insects caught in flight over open areas such as fields or marshes. During breeding season, it builds cup-shaped mud nests under bridges or eaves of buildings. These nests are often built close together in large colonies that can contain hundreds of birds. The Cliff Swallow is an important part of many ecosystems due to its role as an insectivore and its tendency to nest in large numbers near human habitats which helps control insect populations around homes and farms.
