Spotted Flycatcher Collection

The Spotted Flycatcher (Muscicapa striata) is a small passerine bird belonging to the chats and flycatchers family, and is found throughout Europe, North Africa, and parts of Asia, grey-brown upper body with white underparts and a distinctive white eye-ring. Its wings are brown with two white wing bars. It feeds mainly on insects which it catches in mid-air or from foliage. During the breeding season, it builds its nest in trees or shrubs near water sources such as rivers and lakes. In winter, it migrates south to Africa where it spends the cold months before returning to its breeding grounds in springtime. The Spotted Flycatcher is an important species for conservation efforts due to its declining population numbers caused by habitat loss and degradation of wetlands across Europe.
