Bluethroat Collection

Bluethroats (Luscinia svecica) are passerine birds in the family Muscicapidae, and are found in Europe, Asia and North Africa, and migrate to winter in sub-Saharan Africa. Bluethroats have a distinctive blue throat patch with a white border, and males also have a red breast patch. They feed mainly on insects but will also eat berries and seeds. Bluethroats breed mainly in open habitats such as grassland, heathland or scrubland with dense vegetation. They build cup-shaped nests on or near the ground which they line with mosses, lichens and feathers. The female lays up to six eggs which both parents incubate for around two weeks before they hatch, and are threatened by habitat loss due to agricultural intensification as well as predation by cats and other predators such as crows or magpies. Conservation efforts include habitat management through grazing regimes or scrub clearance to create suitable breeding grounds for these beautiful birds.
