Western Tanager Collection

The Western Tanager (Piranga ludoviciana) is a passerine bird of the cardinal and grosbeak family, and is found in western North America, from Alaska to Mexico. The adult male has a bright yellow body with black wings and tail, while the female is mostly olive-green with yellow on her wings and tail. Both sexes have a red head, white eye-ring, and bill. They feed mainly on insects but also eat fruits and berries. During the breeding season they migrate to higher elevations in search of food sources such as insects or fruit trees. In winter they move southward to lower elevations where they can find more food sources such as seeds or berries, and are generally solitary birds but may form small flocks during migration or when searching for food sources in winter months.
