Dickcissel Collection

The Dickcissel (Spiza americana) is a small passerine bird in the family Cardinalidae, and is native to North and South America, where it can be found in grasslands, savannas, and agricultural fields. The male has a black head with yellow cheeks and throat, and a grayish-brown back with white wing bars. Its call is a loud "dick-dick-cissel" sound that can be heard from far away. It feeds mainly on insects but will also eat some seeds. During breeding season, the male builds an elaborate nest of grasses lined with feathers or fur for its mate to lay her eggs in. The female incubates the eggs while the male defends their territory from other birds by singing loudly or chasing them away. In winter they migrate southward to warmer climates where food sources are more abundant.
