The Elf Owl (Micrathene whitneyi) is a tiny species of owl native to the southwestern United States and Mexico, and is one of the smallest owls in the world, measuring only 6 inches in length and weighing less than 2 ounces, round head with large eyes, short ear tufts, and yellow eyes. Its plumage is light brown with white spots on its back and wings. It feeds primarily on insects such as beetles, crickets, grasshoppers, moths, spiders, scorpions and centipedes. During breeding season it will also eat small mammals such as mice or bats. The Elf Owl nests in cavities of cacti or trees during springtime when food sources are plentiful and can be found in arid deserts or semi-desert habitats where there are plenty of insects to hunt for food.
