Common Loon Collection

The Common Loon is a large water bird native to North America and has a black head, white underbelly and wings, and a distinctive red eye. The loon is an excellent swimmer and diver, able to stay underwater for up to five minutes at a time. Its diet consists of fish, crustaceans, amphibians, insects and other aquatic creatures. The loon's call is one of the most recognizable sounds in nature; it can be heard echoing across lakes during the summer months. Loons are monogamous birds that mate for life; they build their nests on the shoreline or on floating logs near water bodies. They usually lay two eggs per clutch which hatch after 28 days of incubation by both parents, and are listed as Least Concern by the International Union for Conservation of Nature due to their wide range and stable population numbers across North America.
