Clapper Rail Collection

The Clapper Rail (Rallus longirostris) is a species of bird in the Rallidae family, and is found in coastal marshes and wetlands from the eastern United States to Mexico and Central America, large, brown-gray bird with a long, slightly curved bill and short legs. Its body length ranges from 11 to 15 inches, with an average wingspan of 18 to 20 inches and has a loud, distinctive call that sounds like “klee-dap” or “kleep-kleep” which can be heard up to half a mile away. This species feeds on small fish, crustaceans, mollusks and insects which it finds by probing mudflats with its bill or searching for food among vegetation along shorelines. During breeding season they form monogamous pairs and build nests on the ground near water sources such as tidal creeks or lagoons. The Clapper Rail is listed as Near Threatened due to habitat destruction caused by human activities such as urbanization and pollution of wetlands. Conservation efforts are being made to protect this species from further decline in population numbers.
