Whooping Crane Collection

The Whooping Crane (Grus americana) is a large bird of the crane family, Gruiformes, and is one of the rarest birds in North America and is listed as an endangered species. The adult a white body with black wing tips and red patches on its head. Its long neck and legs are also black. It stands about five feet tall when fully grown, making it one of the tallest birds in North America. The whooping crane breeds mainly in Canada but migrates to wintering grounds in Texas or Florida each year. They feed mainly on small fish, frogs, insects, and other aquatic animals found near shallow wetlands or marshes where they forage for food during migration periods. Conservation efforts have been successful at increasing their population size over the past few decades; however, they still remain vulnerable to habitat destruction and human disturbance along their migratory routes.
