Common Crane Collection

The Common Crane (Grus grus) is a species of bird belonging to the Gruiformes family, and is a large, long-legged and long-necked bird, with a grey body and white face. The wingspan of they are reach up to 2 meters in length and has a loud trumpeting call which can be heard from miles away. The Common Crane is an omnivore, feeding on insects, small mammals, amphibians, reptiles and plant material such as berries and grains. Breeding occurs between April and June in Europe and Asia where they build nests on the ground or in trees near wetlands or riversides. These birds are migratory birds that travel south for winter months before returning north for breeding season each year, and are listed as vulnerable due to habitat loss caused by human activities such as agriculture expansion and drainage of wetlands for development projects. Conservation efforts have been put into place to help protect their habitats so that these birds may continue to thrive in our world today.
