Brolga Collection

Brolga (Grus rubicundus) is a species of crane found in Australia and New Guinea, and is the only member of the genus Grus to occur naturally in Australia, and are large birds, standing up to 1.2 m tall with a wingspan of 2 m or more. They have grey plumage, red head and upper neck, long legs and bill, and a distinctive patch of bare skin on their forehead. Brolgas feed mainly on plant material such as grasses, sedges, grains and insects but will also take small vertebrates such as frogs or fish when available, and are gregarious birds often seen in pairs or small flocks but can form large flocks during migration or when food is abundant. Breeding takes place between August and October with pairs building nests on the ground near water sources where they lay one to three eggs which hatch after about 30 days incubation period by both parents, and are important cultural symbols for Indigenous Australians who consider them sacred animals associated with rain-making ceremonies and other rituals related to fertility.
