Andean Flamingo Collection

The Andean Flamingo is a species of flamingo found in the Andes mountain range, and is one of six species of flamingos and is the only one found in South America, bright pink plumage with black tips on its feathers, and its legs are long and pink. Its wingspan can reach up to 1.5 meters, making it one of the largest birds in South America. It feeds mainly on algae, small crustaceans, mollusks, and insects which it filters from shallow waters using its beak-like bill. The Andean Flamingo lives in large colonies near lakes or lagoons at high altitudes between 3200-5000 meters above sea level where they breed during the summer months. They lay their eggs on mudflats or islands within these bodies of water and both parents take turns incubating them until they hatch after about 28 days. The Andean Flamingo is listed as Near Threatened by the IUCN due to habitat loss caused by human activities such as mining, agriculture, and tourism development near their breeding grounds.
