Passenger Pigeon Collection

The Passenger Pigeon (Pigeons Columbiformes) was once the most abundant bird species in North America, with an estimated population of 3 to 5 billion birds. They were a migratory species and traveled in huge flocks that could darken the sky for hours. The Passenger Pigeon was hunted for food and sport, leading to its extinction in 1914, and is believed that the last living individual of this species died at the Cincinnati Zoo. The Passenger Pigeon was a small bird with grayish-brown feathers and blue-gray wings, measuring about 15 inches long from beak to tail. Its diet consisted mainly of nuts, fruits, seeds, and insects. It had a unique ability to communicate through sound signals that could be heard up to one mile away. Unfortunately, due to overhunting and habitat destruction caused by human activities, this once abundant species has been lost forever from our planet's biodiversity.
