Pigeons - Shield, Hyacinth, Suarbian, German Toy Breeds
A portrait of three varieties of pigeon from the German Toy breed. The illustrations of the Shield, Hyacinth and Suabian show their unique features and full body-length to demonstrate their aesthetic qualities as highly esteemed breeds. Each pigeon have their own unique plumage formation, and additional characteristics, such as the Sheild's two-barred wing and feathered feet, the Hyacinth's tri-colour lacing in it's wing, and the Suabian's peak-crested head. Date: circa 1880s

Crested Pigeons - pair wait near a bird feeder for their early morning feed
EL-1927
Crested Pigeons - pair wait near a bird feeder for their early morning feed.
Endemic to Australia.
Ocyphaps lophotes
Once found mainly in the more-arid regions of the Australian outback, this species is now expanding its range towards the coast and is a popular inhabitant in many of the larger towns and cities. When startled the birds fly off with a characteristic whistling sound, generated by specially modified primary feathers in each wing. (NOTE: Often erroneously called Topknot Pigeon, but this name belongs to the rainforest species Lopholaimus antarcticus, mainly an arboreal feeder.)
