Snowy Sheathbill Collection

The Snowy Sheathbill (Chionis albus) is a species of bird in the family Charadriiformes, and is native to Antarctica and the sub-Antarctic islands, where it lives on rocky coasts and beaches and has white plumage with black wings and tail, and a yellow bill. The Snowy Sheathbill feeds mainly on invertebrates such as crabs, molluscs, worms, crustaceans, insects and small vertebrates like fish or chicks of other seabirds. They also scavenge for food near human settlements or fishing boats, and are gregarious birds that form large flocks when feeding or roosting together at night. They breed during the summer months in colonies of up to several hundred pairs on rocky islands off the Antarctic coast. The Snowy Sheathbill is an important species for maintaining ecological balance in its environment by controlling populations of invertebrates that can become pests if left unchecked.
