Eurasian Curlew Collection

The Eurasian Curlew (Numenius arquata) is a large wading bird of the sandpiper family, Charadriiformes, and is found in Europe, Asia and Africa, long curved bill and mottled brown plumage with white underparts. Its wingspan can reach up to 70 cm and its length can reach up to 50 cm. It feeds on insects, worms, crustaceans and other invertebrates found in wetland habitats such as mudflats, marshes and estuaries. During the breeding season it nests on the ground near water sources or in open grasslands. The female lays 3-5 eggs which are incubated for around 25 days before hatching. The chicks are able to fly after about 4 weeks of age but remain dependent on their parents for food until they become independent at around 8 weeks old. This species is classified as Near Threatened by the IUCN due to habitat loss caused by human activities such as drainage of wetlands for agriculture or urban development.
