Red Necked Avocet Collection

The Red-necked Avocet (Recurvirostridae Charadriiformes) is a species of wading bird found in wetlands, estuaries, and shallow lakes across the world and has a distinctive black and white plumage with a reddish neck and head. Its long, thin bill curves upwards at the end to help it feed on aquatic invertebrates such as insects, crustaceans, mollusks, and worms. The avocet often feeds in large flocks with other shorebirds such as sandpipers and plovers. During breeding season they form monogamous pairs that build nests on the ground near water sources. The female lays three to four eggs which are incubated by both parents for about three weeks before hatching. Red-necked Avocets are vulnerable to habitat destruction due to human activities such as draining wetlands for agricultural use or urban development. Conservation efforts have been put in place to protect this species from further decline in population numbers.
