American Avocet Collection

The American Avocet (Recurvirostridae Charadriiformes) is a species of shorebird found in North America and has a long, slender neck and bill, black legs and feet, white head and neck with black stripes, and dark brown wings with white stripes. The American Avocet feeds on small aquatic invertebrates such as crustaceans, insects, mollusks, worms and small fish. They breed in shallow wetlands across the United States from April to August. During the winter months they migrate south to Mexico or Central America where they spend the cold months feeding on mudflats or coastal lagoons. The American Avocet is an important indicator species for wetland health as it relies heavily on these habitats for food and nesting sites, and is also an important part of the food chain for many other animals including raptors that feed on its eggs or young birds during migration periods.
