American Oystercatcher Collection

The American Oystercatcher (Haematopus palliatus) is a large shorebird in the family Charadriiformes, and is found along the Atlantic and Gulf coasts of North America, from Canada to Mexico. The species has a black head, neck, and chest with white underparts and wings. Its bill is long and bright orange-red with a black tip. It feeds on mollusks such as mussels, clams, oysters, snails and crabs by using its bill to pry open shells or dig them up from the sand. Breeding pairs are monogamous and may remain together for several years. They nest on beaches or mudflats near water's edge where they lay two to four eggs in a shallow scrape lined with shells or pebbles. The chicks are precocial; they leave the nest shortly after hatching but remain dependent upon their parents for food until they fledge at about six weeks of age, and are listed as threatened in some states due to habitat loss from coastal development and human disturbance of nesting sites.
