African Oystercatcher Collection

The African Oystercatcher (Haematopus moquini) is a species of large shorebird belonging to the family Charadriiformes, and is native to the coasts of southern and eastern Africa, where it can be found along sandy beaches, rocky shores, and mudflats, long red bill used for prying open mollusks such as oysters and mussels. Its head and neck are black with white stripes on its cheeks, while its back is dark brown with white spots. Its wings are black with white edges, while its underparts are white. The African Oystercatcher feeds mainly on mollusks but also eats crustaceans, insects, worms and small fish. It nests in colonies near the shoreline in shallow scrapes lined with pebbles or shells. This species is considered vulnerable due to habitat loss from coastal development as well as predation by humans and other animals such as foxes or cats. Conservation efforts have been put in place to protect this species from further decline including habitat protection measures and education campaigns about responsible beach use by humans.
