Antarctic Tern Collection

The Antarctic Tern (Sterna vittata) is a species of seabird in the Laridae family, which also includes gulls and skimmers, and is found in Antarctica, South Georgia, and the Falkland Islands and has a white head with black cap and nape, grey back, white underparts with black streaks on the breast, long red bill with dark tip and yellow legs. The Antarctic Tern feeds mainly on small fish such as krill or squid but will also take crustaceans or insects when available. Its breeding season begins in October when they arrive to their breeding grounds from their wintering areas. They nest in colonies on rocky shores or islands near the coast of Antarctica where they lay two to three eggs per clutch. During winter months they migrate to warmer waters off South America's coasts where they feed for several months before returning to their nesting sites again for another breeding season.
