Shore Dotterel Collection

Shore Dotterel (Charadriidae Charadriiformes) is a small shorebird native to Australia and New Zealand and has a distinctive black-and-white plumage, with a white forehead and crown, black eye stripe, white throat and breast, grey back and wings, and yellow legs. The male has a red bill while the female has an orange one. Shore Dotterels feed on insects, crustaceans, molluscs and worms found in shallow water or on mudflats. They breed during summer months in coastal areas of both countries. Their nests are shallow scrapes in the sand lined with vegetation or shells. Both parents incubate the eggs for about 25 days before they hatch into chicks that fledge after another 25 days or so, and are vulnerable to human disturbance during nesting season as well as predation from cats and foxes. Conservation efforts have been successful in increasing their numbers but further protection is needed to ensure their long-term survival.
