Black Skimmer Collection

The Black Skimmer (Rynchops niger) is a species of Charadriiformes bird in the Laridae family, and are found along coasts and in large rivers throughout the Americas, from Canada to Argentina, unique appearance, with an orange-red bill that is longer on one side than the other and a black head, neck, and upperparts. They feed by skimming the surface of water for small fish or invertebrates with their lower mandible. During breeding season they form large colonies on sandy beaches or islands where they lay two to four eggs in shallow scrapes lined with vegetation or debris. The chicks are precocial and can fly within three weeks of hatching. This species is listed as Least Concern by IUCN due to its wide distribution and stable population trend despite some local declines due to human activities such as beach development or fishing pressure.
