Southern Cassowary Collection

The Southern Cassowary (Casuarius casuarius) is a large, flightless bird found in the tropical rainforests of Australia and New Guinea, and is the second-largest living bird in the world, after its relative, the ostrich, glossy black plumage with bright blue and purple neck feathers, and a bright red wattle on its head. Its long legs are strong enough to support its weight of up to 60kgs and can run at speeds of up to 50km/h. It feeds mainly on fruits but also eats insects, small vertebrates, fungi and other plant material. The Southern Cassowary plays an important role in dispersing seeds from fruit it consumes throughout its habitat as it moves around looking for food. This helps maintain healthy ecosystems by ensuring that new plants can grow from these seeds that have been spread by this unique creature.
