Tawny Frogmouth Collection

The Tawny Frogmouth (Podargus strigoides) is a species of bird in the Caprimulgiformes family, and is native to Australia, where it can be found in woodlands, forests and urban areas, large head and long bill, with a wide gape that allows it to capture large prey items such as insects, small mammals and reptiles. Its plumage is mottled grey-brown with white spots and streaks on the wings and tail and has yellow eyes with black pupils which give it an owl-like appearance. During the day they perch motionless on tree branches or other objects, relying on their camouflage to avoid detection by predators. At night they become active hunters using their excellent hearing to locate prey items in the dark, and are monogamous birds that nest in tree hollows or other cavities where they lay two eggs each breeding season which are incubated by both parents for around three weeks before hatching into fluffy chicks ready to explore their new world.
