Volcano Hummingbird Collection

The Volcano Hummingbird (Selasphorus flammula) is a species of hummingbird found in Central America and Mexico, and is a small bird, measuring only 3-4 inches in length, with a metallic green back and white underparts. Its wings are short and rounded, with an iridescent red throat patch. The Volcano Hummingbird feeds on nectar from flowers such as lilies, columbines, and honeysuckles. It also eats insects for protein. This species can be seen hovering near flowers or perched on branches while feeding. The male Volcano Hummingbird has an elaborate courtship display which includes flying up to 30 feet in the air before diving down again rapidly. This species is considered to be of least concern by the IUCN due to its wide range and large population size; however it may be threatened by habitat destruction caused by human activities such as deforestation or urbanization.
