Rufous Hummingbird Collection

The Rufous Hummingbird (Selasphorus rufus) is a species of hummingbird found in western North America, and is one of the most widespread and common hummingbirds in the region, with a range extending from Alaska to Mexico. The Rufous Hummingbird is easily identifiable by its bright orange-red throat and breast, as well as its green back and wings and has a long, straight bill that it uses to feed on nectar from flowers. In addition to nectar, it also eats insects for protein. The Rufous Hummingbird nests in trees or shrubs near open areas where they can find food sources such as flowers or insects. During migration season they can be seen traveling southward along the Pacific Coast of North America in large flocks known as “fallouts”, and are an important pollinator species for many plants and are considered an indicator species for healthy ecosystems due to their sensitivity to environmental changes such as climate change or habitat destruction.
