American Kestrel Collection

The American Kestrel (Falco sparverius) is a small falcon found throughout North and South America, and is the most common falcon in the United States, and one of the smallest raptors in North America, distinctive plumage pattern, with slate-blue wings, rusty-brown back and tail feathers, white underparts, and two black facial stripes. It feeds mainly on insects but also takes small rodents and birds. Its call is a loud “klee-klee-klee” that can be heard over long distances. During migration it often forms large flocks with other raptors such as hawks or vultures. The American Kestrel nests in cavities or on ledges of cliffs or buildings; it also uses nest boxes provided by humans for nesting sites. This species is declining due to habitat loss from development; however, conservation efforts are helping to protect this beautiful bird of prey from further decline.
