Swallow Tailed Kite Collection

The Swallow Tailed Kite (Accipitridae Accipitriformes) is a small bird of prey found in the southeastern United States, and is easily recognizable by its long, forked tail and white head and neck. The kite has a wingspan of up to four feet and can reach speeds of up to 40 miles per hour while hunting. Its diet consists mainly of insects, lizards, frogs, and other small animals. The Swallow Tailed Kite nests in tall trees near wetlands or swamps during the breeding season from March to July. It migrates south for the winter months, returning north in late February or early March. This species is listed as endangered due to habitat loss caused by urbanization and deforestation. Conservation efforts have been successful in some areas but more needs to be done if this species is to survive into the future.
