The Red Goshawk (Accipitridae Accipitriformes) is a medium-sized bird of prey found in Australia and New Guinea and has a distinctive red head, neck, and chest with white barring on the wings and tail. The upperparts are greyish-brown with dark barring. The bill is yellow with a black tip, while the legs are yellowish-orange. Its diet consists mainly of small mammals such as rodents, reptiles, insects, and birds. It hunts by soaring high above its prey before diving down to capture it in its talons and can be seen perched atop trees or flying low over open grasslands in search of food. They form monogamous pairs that breed annually during springtime when they build large stick nests high up in trees or on cliffsides where they lay two to three eggs which hatch after about 35 days incubation period.
