The Lesser Kestrel (Falco naumanni) is a small raptor belonging to the Accipitridae family of birds, and is found in open habitats across Europe, North Africa, and parts of Asia, wingspan of about 38-45 cm and weighs between 110-130 g. Its plumage is mostly light brown with darker markings on its back and wings. Its tail is forked with white tips on the outer feathers. The Lesser Kestrel feeds mainly on insects such as grasshoppers, beetles, and dragonflies but will also take small rodents or birds when available. During the breeding season it nests in colonies in cavities or crevices in buildings or cliffs; outside of this period it roosts singly or in small groups. The species is listed as Vulnerable by IUCN due to its declining population caused by habitat destruction and pesticide use; however conservation efforts are underway to help protect this species from further decline.
